I think we’ve all heard those words at one point or another… either from our parents while we were bothering them or our friends while taking part in some uncool activity.
I was reminded of this little phrase while watching the evening news tonight. They were talking about the congressional investigation of the baseball steroid scandal. And immediately I thought, don’t they have anything better to do?
While there are problems with our health care system, public education and economy, they are sitting around talking about what baseball player injected what where and when. Does this seem a little odd to anyone else? Did you think when you elected your representative that they would be spending any time on this issue? Last I checked, congress is a legislative body, intended to enact policies for the betterment of the county. Is a crack-down on steroids in baseball going to improve your life, or mine? Somehow I seriously doubt it.

Thank you, Lisa, for bringing up this topic. I've wondered for a long time whether being an investigative body is really in the legislature's job description or did they derive it out of the need to see what legislation is needed or how something they passed is working. If it's a derived function, then something has gone wrong because most of the investigations don't lead to new or needed legislation. At least we don't hear of any.
The hearings that I have attended have all been "showcases". Everything is scripted beforehand or written out for submission so there is nothing original. It's just a chance for politicians and others to make speeches and show their indignation.
Hmm, you know in the Book of Mormon they go for like 60 years with no legislative or executive power. So I guess my question is, does it take 500 people working full time to make good laws. If that was all they did shouldn't they be able to make them in a months hard work and then go back to campaigning?
Or maybe that is what they do. . .
Ha. That's funny. But then I always think of that when it comes to most sports-related things ... "don't they have anything better to do?" It's crazy the way most of our society is obsessed with sports! Happy almost birthday :)
