There’s something GREEN in my food!

Steve and I signed up for “Community Supported Agriculture” this week. Basically, we get a box of fresh veggies each week which Steve picks up close to campus.

In our first box this week, in addition to the chard, leeks, squash, carrots, artichokes and radishes, we received two veggies we’d never heard of: spigariello greens and agretti. Sensitive to the plight of those ignorant of heirloom Italian vegetables, the box came with suggested recipes for the included veggies and a little information about the aforementioned foreign greens.

Spigariello greens are related to broccoli and we are planning to eat them in a salad tomorrow with the radishes and carrots we got. The agretti is apparently is a close cousin to the tumbleweed (sounds yummy, doesn’t it?). We sautéed them and added them to white rice and strips of Korean barbeque beef to make the beautiful plate you see below.

Of course, the “we” used here is the royal we… I had nothing to do with it. Well, maybe that’s not entirely true… I think I was there on the shopping trip to CostCo where we bought the beef.

More weird vegetables to come. I know you’re all on the edge of your seats… stay tuned!

I've wanted to do that same sort of thing, sign up for locally grown fresh fruit and veggies. But I'm afraid that I won't be able to eat them all because I don't think that I will get much help from the meat and rice eating Filipino that I live with. By the way, how did it taste?

Really good, actually. The agretti has a mild, slightly tangy flavor (it's very subtle). It really took on the flavor of the meat, and was a pretty painless way to get more veggies. So far the veggie box has forced us to put more thought into our meals to try to use all of the items provided. We're going shopping tomorrow for supplies to make potato leek soup and sweet baked squash.

That sounds so awesome. I am just getting my garden planted-I am late. I am going to look for the spigariello greens. They would be great to try in a stir fry.

The veggies pictured were agretti, which were tasty. The spigariello we tried in a salad and didn't much care for it. They supposedly can be used as a cooking veggie, but I don't know that we'll use them. Not our favorite, that's for sure.

Looks really good. Much easier to do the veggie thing when they are practically handed to you, huh? I hate shopping for veggies (and don't always know what to do with them, either), but I have started to get Bak Choi (spelling?) from Jessica, so I have actually used the veggies...We need more of them in our lives!
