Thirteen years ago, on the 13th of August, Steve and I went on our first official date. We like to mark the occasion because it truly is the day everything changed for us. We'd been friends for a couple years, and this change in direction (at the risk of sounding too melodramatic about the whole thing) became the event that defined our entire adult lives. Yeah, marriage is important and all that, but our wedding was nowhere near the monumental shift in course that us stepping out as "Lisa and Steve" for the first time was.
As any truly quality date at seventeen years old does, ours included pizza and a movie. It was somewhat atypical of a lot of dating experiences I suspect because we already knew each other quite well; we hung out every day at school, frequently afterward as well and often chatted online late into the night. Steve took the opportunity at the Lakewood Round Table to introduce me to a couple of his "mysterious older friends" (Scott and Eric). I suspect Steve was proving to them that he actually had a girlfriend and wasn't just making the whole thing up, while at the same time proving to me that those older friends he sometimes talked about did in fact exist and were not figments of his imagination.
I've been sorting through old pictures, and while there aren't many from those very early days, I'll share a couple.
This is the earliest known picture of us, from our friend Melissa's 18th birthday in September 2000 (yes, I know I've posted this picture before, but I like it).
This is from prom, May 2001, back at Eric's apartment after the event. I think it's amusing. I'd clearly had enough with all the picture taking.
And here we are today, dressed up for dinner out, because we will take any excuse to go out and have delicious food (yes, I know these need red-eye correction, but I'm using a mac and can't figure the darn thing out... maybe I'll do an edit and fix later).
Anyway, we had a very nice dinner and drinks at Oswald. We talked about work and marveled at how strange (and wonderful) it is to be adults. Even at 30 years old, I still feel like I'm getting away with something when I order a cocktail. I wouldn't go back to those early days for any price. Being old fogies that eat dinner at six o'clock and then get to go home together is awesome.
