Propaganda: Part II (final part, I promise)

I would like to use this post to express a pet peeve of mine, so poor Steve will stop having to hear about it.

As if the drug and political commercials aren’t enough fun on their own, we are also bombarded with car insurance commercials. I will try to make this short, so that I don’t turn people off to my blog because I spent an entire page ranting about it.

Every car insurance commercial says they can save you money. They quote “Sally saved $500 by switching to _______________.” Of course Sally saved money by switching. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have switched. Car insurance commercials are completely useless on the information front because they have no way of applying to you as an individual. There’s no way to know which company would be cheapest without getting quotes from all of them. And maybe I should give the companies the benefit of the doubt and say that they’re just trying to get their name out there, and get you to request a quote. But I don’t appreciate them trying to represent that they can save you money by relying on data for customers who switch… which is totally irrelevant to your situation and not representative of all those who have requested quotes. When I was getting my own car insurance, I shopped around a little bit and got 2 quotes that were twice what the company my parents use was charging. They don’t mention that in the ads.

Anyway, on to my last issue with car insurance commercials. Geico is running an ad campaign talking about how “especially for California” they have lowered the rates in our state. However, when Steve and I went to Hawaii in October, we saw the same ads with the state name changed, of course, to Hawaii. I think we also saw similar ads in Vegas. Point being, I get annoyed when I’m lied to. Even by a talking gecko.

The gecko brings up another interesting point. Sometimes, the gimic of an ad is so funny or interesting that I totally forget what was being sold! Every now and then, however, they get it just right. I mean...come on...the VW commercials with Peter Stormare were awesome. "V-Dub! Holding it down on the engineering tip y'all. Yah!" (See You Tube for clarification as needed)
