Happy Birthday!
The boys celebrated their fifth birthday at Grandma and Grandpa Pool's house in Lakewood. My mom was recovering from surgery and we were glad we could provide some distraction as she was basically confined to the recliner.
Distraction is our middle name! (as in "driving their parents to...")
Dad presents... birthday cake!
Henry selected strawberry:
Jack wanted chocolate:
The boys were ready to rip into their gifts.
New helmets! I wonder what those are for...
What could be in these big boxes from Grandma and Grandpa?
New scooters!
The boys have absolutely adored their cool light-up scooters from Grandma Loveridge, but since those scooters are a bit small now, it was time for the next size up.

Because, of course, they agree on nothing.

Ready to roll (with helmets, of course, crowns are just for the picture):
Henry shows off one of his favorite birthday gifts, temporary tattoos with rainbows, unicorn narwhals, hearts and gems!
Grandma and Grandpa did good on that one.
Jack shows off his space shuttle from Mom and Dad:
Grandpa helps the boys put together small Lego sets from Mom and Dad:
The boys tend to point out people they see not wearing helmets. They incessantly ask why those people aren't wearing helmets, and all I've been able to come up with has been to say, "everyone makes bad decisions sometimes."
Grandma and Grandpa did good on that one.

Jack and Grandpa make progress on the Lego monster truck:
The boys have gotten really into Legos, although they still tend to be a bit rough with them, requiring frequent re-assembly by Mom and Dad.
Other Lakewood/Long Beach Adventures
Jack supervises Grandpa fixing some doors:
Jack loves to be involved with projects around the house. Hopefully once he's old enough to wield the power tools, he'll pick up a lot of great skills from his dad and grandpa.
We wandered over to the El Dorado Nature Center, which made for a nice morning outing. The highlight was definitely the turtles in the pond, although spotting fish in the stream was also popular.I remember this turtle from my childhood:
Disgruntled children whose Mom made them pose by this tree:
On a tip from Aunt Staci, one hot afternoon we wandered over to the Cerritos Library. It was certainly quite a sight to see.

Seriously, this is a library?!
Was their favorite part the giant aquarium? Full-size T-Rex skeleton? Model space shuttle? Giant indoor tree? Of course not, it was the tablets with games!
The boys are so deprived, since their mean old parents don't let them have any tablet or computer time at home.

On a couple other toasty afternoons, Aunt Staci was kind enough to invite us over for some swimming.
Henry throws rings for Cousin Rosie and Josh to fetch while Jack looks on:

Jack, on the move:
Henry preferred to stick by the stairs, but also did some good paddling around the pool:

Beating the heat by getting an early morning start, we headed over to "airplane park" (Del Valle Park in Lakewood) to meet up with the Lucindo family. The boys had a blast playing with their cousins while Steve and I were glad to get at least a little time to chat with Natalie and Richard.
Jack tries to pull Nathan's side of the see-saw down, but is no match for Josh and Rosie:
Henry tries to help Nathan:
The boys were quite amused by this game pulling pine needles apart with Rosie:

Henry got a set too, which makes him look like an awesome dinosaur, but he refused to let me take a picture of him in it. Which is definitely on-brand for my newly minted five year-olds.
