A Little Bit of Color

In an effort to move our house from abandoned and haunted-looking to something a little more friendly in appearance, Steve and I dug out the weeds in front of our picket fence and planted some primroses and annuals.

A little before-and-after at the halfway point:
Finished!
I actually did most of the work on these front beds myself while Steve toiled away planting some bareroot roses on the other side of the fence. I've never much cared for yardwork and have traditionally shied away from it. I spent some time thinking about exactly why I don't like yardwork and it boiled down to 1) I don't like being in the sun and 2) I'm a bit prissy with my fingernails. So, I simply started doing weeding for a couple hours when I arrive home from work in the afternoon while our North-facing yard is shady and wearing nitrile gloves to keep the dirt out from under my fingernails. Implementing these measures, I've been able to get quite a lot done.

We've received many complements from the neighbors (although, really, expectations are low given the previously dilapidated condition of our house) and it's nice to hear that we're making the street a little more pleasant for passers-by.
