And then there were five…

Sometime last night, our rabbit SweetPea passed away. Though she had just traveled home with us from a stay at my parents’ house in Southern California (they watched the bunnies to allow Steve and I to go on vacation to Oregon), she did not seem overly stressed and ate well last night. All we can figure is that it was just her time.

SweetPea had been a part of our household since we adopted her from the Monterey chapter of the House Rabbit Society in July 2003. They estimated her age at the time to be around two years old (these estimates are often optimistic, however, so she may have been older). She was at least eight years old when she passed away, which is about the expected lifespan for a rabbit, which in my experience ranges from around eight to ten years.

She was our second rabbit. She never liked being held or even petted much, but she was so expressive and hilarious to watch. Below are two scrapbook pages I had made of her from her early days with us back in the old garage in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

We already miss her tremendously. She had been part of our lives for the past six years, and it was a privilege to have her stay with us.

We are sorry to hear about the passing of Sweet Pea. It is hard to loose a pet. I'm certain your parents are glad it happened to you two and not to them. As I recall she was part of a bonded pair. How is the other half of the team taking it?

Good memory! SweetPea was bonded with our third rabbit Demetri, the fluffy tan angora. He seemed a little depressed earlier, but we made some extra effort to get him out to play (currently he is running around the living room at my feet). He's a tough little bunny and I'm sure he'll be all right with a little extra attention. He's at least eight years old himself, so we don't intend to get him another companion; we'll try to be good enough company for him.

RIP Sweetpea. We'll pour out a 40 for ya. Serious though, it sucks losing a pet :(
